Kimberley Leggett was crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 on November 10, 2011 at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre by Deborah Priya Henry. She also won subsidiary titles: Miss Photogenic, Best Bikini Body, and Nestle Fitnesse Award. She hopes to promote Malaysia (Malaysia's unity campaign) and safe driving among the youth of Malaysia. 1. Who is Kimberley Leggett? Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Growing up a tomboy, the mischievous kid who would come home with my knees scratched, refused to wear party dresses and who's goal in life was to always be better than the boys also was very active in music and ballet/tap dancing. I was always very sporty in school and that hasn't changed until now; but I am more accepting of the party dresses! :P I'm someone who loves to live, laugh and love and friends often describe me as funny, smart and independent.
2. Always figures as a favorite to the crown of Miss Malaysia, how you feel about that?
Its very flattering but at the same time it was and still remains something that truly motivates me. It's good because it keep me pushing myself and gives me confidence knowing that others see a potential in me, but on the other hand I find that it means there are expectations of you and if they aren't met you risk disappointing people. I don't want to live by expectations but keep raising the bar higher for myself.
3. How are you preparing for the Miss Universe Pageant?
Right now, I'm focusing on my physicality which means working out, and trying to get into a routine that will help me best achieve my goal and maintain it for Miss Universe. As time goes on I will begin to work on and incorporate other trainings, catwalk and QnA sessions into my schedule as well.
4. Tell us about your country, if you could promote Malaysia as you would?
If I had to promote Malaysia, I would say that if you want to explore the continent of Asia, you can kill two birds with one stone by visiting Malaysia! It's a melting pot of cultures, cuisines and lifestyles with a diverse landscape -from mountains to relaxed beaches and lush rain forests. You can enjoy Malaysia which is 'Truly Asia' from the food and culture but you fall in love with Malaysia by the people.
5. Tell us about your safe driving initiative on young people in Malaysia.
I've had first hand experience in accidents in my life- behind the wheel myself, on the passenger seat and been the 'emergency contact' for loved ones who have been in accidents. From the moment I had my own accident on the way to the casting callback from Miss Universe Malaysia, on the highway where I'm lucky to have not have been injured - it made me realize that safe driving amongst new drivers and youths especially needs to be improved. Texting while driving for example is a habit that needs to be changed. I'm working on trying to talk to the Ministry which handles similar campaigns and will progress from there on
My mother. I'm an only child and my mother has been more than my nurturer but she has been my sister and my best friend at the same time. She's been able to juggle the stresses of work, support my pursuits/school activities/hobbies as well as hold my hand through puberty and growing and still have time to sit down with me and watch a movie together. I think that I am the person I am today because of how I was raised and the beliefs she instilled in me, and I hope to be as good a mother and role model to my children as she was for me.
7. You plan to study at the University of California, Los Angles (UCLA), What you want study?
I'm hoping that I'll continue my initial plan to study at UCLA next year and will be doing Business/Economics.
8. As you see yourself in 10 years?
By the time I'm 28 I wish to have finished my masters, be in a happy relationship and have a thriving successful career whether it be starting my own brand or being an entrepreneur. I definitely hope to be extremely happy and loving life.
9. Deborah Henry Miss Malaysia 2011 has given you any advice for your preparation?
Work hard & do everything you can in order to prepare yourself, so that you can compete knowing that you couldn't have done anything else differently. No matter the outcome, you know that you did your best.
10. What goals do you have for this year 2012?
I would like to achieve as much as I can with my title whether it be campaigning, ambassadorships etc. I also wish to work my hardest in terms of preparing for Miss Universe and to look the best that I've ever looked and feel proud of what I've accomplished when I stand on that stage in December.
11. Any advice for girls who want to be beauty queens?
Work hard and prepare to the best of your ability, know who you are and believe in yourself and no one can ever knock you down especially when the competition gets tough and most importantly - never think twice about what you believe in as everyone has their own opinions for you to hear but you make the final decision.
12. What is your special message to your fans, and to all people around the world?
Thank you to all those who have supported me from the beginning and continue to do so; the faith you have in me makes me thrive to do my best. I will stand at Miss Universe with Malaysia in my heart and will hopefully make everyone proud. Kimboleh! :)
